Shadows in the Dark is LD Hutchinson's debut novella, the first of a series encompassing a novel.LD Hutchinson has an intriguing concept with Shadows in the Dark. She's combined vampires and witches in a very novel way to my knowledge thus far, though we don't know much more than that. Why? Well, I was hoping this book wouldn't be only the first part of a bigger novel, given its price, but it was at just under 16 thousand words, which makes for a disappointing ending simply for the fact that I can't continue reading until the next book is released in July. The author has told me there will be approximately five to six books in the series.Avangeline is a young woman without much of a past, but is destined for something far greater than she ever possibly imagined. She's not a very strong heroine, at least, not yet, save for a brief moment, but the potential is there. This first part of the series shows us the very beginnings of what she learns about herself and her fate.Phoenix is the vampire sent to protect her, and he's not real thrilled about the job. He starts out interesting and then suddenly turns into a jerk shortly after Sarah, Avangeline's best friend, mentions that he's . . . well, a jerk. He seemed very childish in nature after that point and made me almost not care about him, yet I'm intrigued to learn more. The prologue is intended to be read as a letter from one character to another, though I wish it had been clearer about its intent before the end of the letter. The second person point-of-view threw me at first. A salutation at the beginning, or italicizing the text would have been helpful. The rest of the story is in first person POV.I am, however, very curious about the history involved with this story—the vampire clan history. I really liked what was mentioned of it and expect to learn more in the future releases. As a reader, I liked the novella, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars (my star rating system: 0=hated it, 1=really disliked it, 2=disliked it, 3=liked it, 4=really liked it, and 5=loved it), and because I'm curious enough to continue reading the story, so kudos go to the author for that. It's a difficult feat with me. As a writer, it holds a few similarities to my own vampire book series, but only a few, and reminded me of a few things I need to clarify down the road. I thank the author for that. As an editor, I wanted to get out my red pen because it is in desperate need of a good edit by an experienced editor, and it should be priced at $0.99 simply because it is not a full novel. A full-sized debut ebook would be priced at $1.99 or $2.99. But, as I said, I really liked the concept, but think it could be so much better overall. If grammatical and punctuation errors don't bother you as a reader, then you'll enjoy this short novel. If you're an editor like me, be warned because you'll want to get out your red pen too.I do believe that, much like the storyline, this author has a lot of potential to grow into a wonderful writer. I wish her the best of luck and look forward to reading the rest of this series.

Loved it! This is the first book I read for Leah, and I have to say that I'm amazed by the imagination she has. Its bit short, but it still caught my attention from the beginning. I like how it all turned out. And there's alot of mystery in it (and of course romance xD ). I don't wanna spoil much, but basically its about Vamps and Demons as far as I know. There's a second book to it, and I can't wait till I read it since the ending in this one was such a cliffhanger (Leah >_> why must you kill me)....And so, I would recommend this book to anyone. It's worth a read. ^_^.

This is a short story just giving us the basics of maybe an upcoming novel that will take us thru the changes that Angie must endure. Phoenix has been given the obligation to become Angie’s guardian and protector, he’s also a vampire. Angie comes from a long line of witches and it’s her time to train and save the world. She learns that not everyone around her is as they seem.

First let me say I love paranormal books. There is something about them that really gets me into reading them. Now I got this book for free to read and review. I gave this book 4 stars I so wanted to give 5 stars. But the story was way too short, it is an excellent story one that I would have finished last night. But of course I was way to tired to finish it so I finished this morning. I hope this book would be part of a series, because the ending leaves you hanging and wanting more. Will Angie become what she is suppose to become? The story had action and was overall a wonderful read. I just hope the author has more of this story and is hoping to write about it soon. Because I can see myself reading more! Shadows in the Dark is about a girl named Angie who starts off with breaking up with her boyfriend. Her and her friends go out to a club and Angie gets a bit tipsy where she meets a guy who takes her to his car. While in the car he tries to bite her. Next thing you know Angie wakes up in her bed and wonders if she dreamed what had happened. The next night she goes to another club with her friend Sarah and her boyfriend Anthony. There she learns something that her friend has been hiding for years from her. Something that is paranormal. In the midst of all this her ex boyfriend is coming for her. And Phoenix is her protector, because Angie is not a normal human. Angie has to take the place of one of her family members. It is time to train!

I got pulled right in from the beginning;)!!I am enjoying the book, love the authors writing and getting to know the characters as I progress. Update when finished ;)!!I read this book in one day and am waiting for the next installment of this series. I was glad to hear its going to be 5-6 books (I personally would cut it to a trilogy with more words per book) however I'm not a writer just a reader. The paranormal genre always was a fascination for me because anything can happen and it's up to the author to create whatever she can imagine and it's accepted because its something that simply doesn't happen in real life.I love it And always did. This author also tossed in a mystery which we will discover in the following books. These books are her first published books and she is a talented writer.I also enjoyed her no nonsense free style of writing, getting right to the story about avangeline and we got to know the characters as we proceed reading The book.I did see a few errors but it did not bother me,I skimmed right along.I will be waiting to see what happens in part 2:-)!!!!I give this 3-4 stars because I enjoyed it immensely.

I had the wonderful opportunity to read this book for Leah as a reviewer.I love paranormal books and this one hit the mark on my page! I love the characters, but would've loved more development and background on more characters like Sarah and Anthony. This book is very fast paced. It could've had more "filler" to inform the reader more about the bad creatures and some of the character interactions. This debut novel did have some spelling errors and type-O's (such as though but was thought). Even though there was mistakes and some other issues I have to say I will give this book a 4 star rating. I loved the vampire/witch twist and also the weird night watchers and zombies. The story left me wanting more!!! I want to know what Phoenix's deal and if they are bonded???I loved it! :

This is the first book I’ve read by L.D. Hutchinson. It’s about Avangeline, who is quickly pushing to a world she never knew existed and finds out she is not as “normal” as she thought she was. When I started reading I have to say that the Prologue was a little confusing to me. After a beginning it and getting lost in the rush of it, I skipped the remainder of it and went on to reading the first chapter and enjoyed the book. Besides the prologue the only drawback I would say is that it was too short. I just finished it and am ready to start book two. I look forward to reading more from L.D. Hutchinson and would recommend this book. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This was a very short read for me, but it was entertaining and fun, nonetheless. I like Leah's free-spirited, I-don't-really-give-a-damn writing more than anything. It may have deterred the seriousness of the overall story, but it did put a smile on my face. This story was way too short for me, again, and mainly because I'm dying now to find out what's going to happen next. I felt it should have been fanned out a bit better, so the climax didn't just happen within 3 chapters in.It's worth the read, though, and the characters are very enjoyable.L.D. Hutchinson

The story is sweet, fast and short. No unnecessary detail and the story if not entirely unique in its premise is fun and worth the read. I loved the authors own unique voice which enriches and enhances the story. I believe this is the first part of a greater whole. The last elevator scene sure cannot be the end. I look forward to read the rest of the story to find out more about Evangeline. I give this story a 4 * rating. The rating is not 4 because the story lacked suspense, or to draw the reader in. But the story is unfinished and it left me feeling cheated and wanting more.

This is the first book I have read by this new, young author. From my understanding, it is the first of several shorts that combine to be a novel. It has a good plot and the characters are unique. The author has her own style of writing, it is creative and mysterious. She leaves you wanting to know what happens next with Angie and her friends. I hope to see the author continue to grow as a writer with her upcoming books in this series.

This was a great little story that kept me glued to my Kindle until the end. I really enjoyed the characters, and the storyline. Author L.D. Hutchinson has created an intriguing dark world, and her writing had a great flow. For me, it ended too soon. I wanted to see what happened in the basement! Can't wait for the next one! :)

I gave this 5*s out of 5*s because I thought it was a cute little story and great characters. It got straight to the point with very little details! I like stories that get straight to the point. There could have been a little more action but I believe that the way the story ended that there maybe more action in the next one.

I think that the story was unique with some interesting characters. The story comes to an abrupt end so I am glad that I will be reading the next part. All in all it kept me interested and was a fun read.

Definitely a good book but I hate that it's so short compared to her newest novel out.
